Ken Anderson is in his 20th season at the helm of the Temple women's gymnastics program. During his collegiate coaching career, Anderson has been a part of seven NCAA Regional qualifying teams and an NCAA Championship entrant. Additionally, Anderson has sent 13 individual all-around competitors to the NCAA Regional meet. Under Anderson four teams have qualified for the USAG National Championships, and his most recent team finished in the Final Four. Last season, Anderson guided the Owls to a 14-14 overall record, their best since a 17-11 showing in 1995. Two of his gymnastics were honored as USAG All-Americans. During Anderson's first four years at Temple, the Owls improved their win total every season, turning in successive records of 10-5, 15-5, 16-12 and 20-6. Anderson and his 1988-89 team shattered every individual record and set a new school record by going 20-6 overall. Three seasons later, Anderson's team tied the school record by posting a 20-6 overall mark and placed fourth at the NCAA East Regional meet. It is Temple's best finish to date. Anderson was awarded Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1987 and 1992. He also earned the NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year award in 1989. Anderson led all three teams (1987, 1989 and 1992) to the NCAA Northeast Regionals. Anderson, who has compiled a 216-254 overall record at Temple, has successfully recruited talented national-level gymnasts and has narrowed the gap between Temple and perennial Eastern gymnastics powers by serving as a true "players" coach and by scheduling the most competitive opponents. Prior to Temple, Anderson served as the head women's gymnastics coach at the University of Massachusetts for two seasons. The Minutewomen compiled an 11-2 and a 10-6 record under Anderson and were runner-up at the 1983 A-10 Championships. Anderson began his coaching career as the Southern Connecticut State University women's gymnastics assistant coach. After three years he moved on to Massachusetts, where he assisted for two years before accepting the head coaching position for the women's gymnastics team. Anderson has also coached at the Shoreline Gymnastics Club in Saybrook, Conn., and at the Hampshire Gymnastics School in Amherst, Mass. A two-time All-America gymnast at Southern Connecticut, Anderson graduated in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. He received a Master of Science degree in urban education from Southern Connecticut in 1982. In the early 1980s, Anderson earned a black belt in karate, a sport he also taught for several years. He has incorporated a degree of karate training into Temple's gymnastics program in order to improve self-discipline, minimize injury through quicker reaction time and amplify his own spotting skills. The Northport, N.Y., native and his wife, Debra, reside in Drexel Hill, Pa., with their daughter, Melissa. |
