Former Owl standout and All-American on vault, Theo Maes returns to his alma mater to take over the assistant coaching duties vacated by former Owl Tom Gibbs, who retired after nine seasons with the team. Maes attended Temple from 1999-04, competing for the Owls in each season except 2002-03, when an injury forced him to sit out.
The following year, in his senior season, he placed third on vault at the NCAA Championships. Also competing on floor exercise, he gained notoriety by performing a tucked double front-tucked, front-tucked front 1¾, and is the only United States competitor known to have performed this skill sequence. Along the way, he earned medals in three of his four ECAC Championships.
Graduating with a degree in elementary education, he returned to his native Chicago and taught gymnastics and worked with an after-school recreation program. In addition, this past season he was the coach for the Northwestern University women's and men's club teams.
