PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's crew won silver and bronze medals in a solid day of racing at the 70th Annual Dad Vail Regatta Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River. The Owls' Freshman/Novice 4 took home silver medals while the Varsity 8, looking to capture the program's 20th gold medal, had to settle on bronze.

"They were just better today," said Temple coach Gavin White of the Purdue Varsity 8 crew. "Our kids rowed as fast as they could. We could not get any more out of them."

The Varsity 8, comprised of sophomore stroke Tom Masterson, senior Robert Protesto, (7-seat), senior Thomas Haubrich (6-seat), senior Don Powers (5-seat), sophomore Patrick Curran (4-seat), senior Nicholas Vlahos (3-seat), senior Sam Cunningham (2-seat), senior Chris Schwartz (bow) and senior coxswain Rory Roberts, won its semifinal heat in the morning, besting runner-up Lehigh by five seconds. Rival Saint Joseph's placed fifth, nine seconds behind the Owls, and failed to qualify for the grand final.

In the final, the Owls were a close second with 900 meters remaining in the race, before Purdue took control. Colgate overtook Temple for second place with the Cherry and White trailing the leader by less than five seconds at the finish.

The Owls' Freshman/Novice 4, comprised of coxswain Don Norris, Scott Waters (stroke), John Masterson (3-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (2-seat) and Steve Cahill (bow), lost their race to Santa Clara by a mere eight-tenths of a second. The Temple boat had won its semifinal heat, defeating second place Colgate by three seconds.

In a surprise, the Temple Junior Varsity 8 failed to make the final. The Owls boat, manned by senior stroke Bill Gennaro, sophomore Patrick Welsh (7-seat), senior Bill Gennaro (6-seat), sophomore Scott Herring (6-seat), sophomore Brendan Cunningham (5-seat), sophomore Justin Allphin (4-seat), junior Joseph Welsh (3-seat), sophomore Mike Whitman (2-seat), sophomore Bradford Long (bow) and junior cox Thomas Goldner, placed fourth in its semifinal, six seconds behind the winner, Colgate.
