Called the Old Fox because of his football genius. Coached the Temple football team from 1933 to 1938. During his tenure Owls played in first Sugar Bowl game against Tulane on January 1, 1935. Dave Smukler was star as that team had a 7-0-2 regular season record. Night football became popular at Temple during the Warner Era. Coaching career spanned two centuries and saw him devise many trick plays. Credited with revolutionizing the sport with his development of the single and double wing attacks. Besides Smukler produced great players like Jim Thorpe and Ernie Nevers.
