He is a philosopher, humorist, educator and athlete. He has made Temple athletics known around the world with his humorous stories about his days as a football and track athlete. He has publicized the University by wearing the Cherry and White during his many celebrity tennis appearances and his frequent Master's track outings. While an undergraduate during the early 1960s, he participated in track and field, football and basketball. He was a fullback in football. His best collegiate sport was track where he competed in the high jump, shot put, low hurdles, javelin and discus. He was the Middle Atlantic Conference high jump champion in 1962. Since leaving the University, he has been a loyal alumnus and is now a member of the University Board of Trustees. He has also been honored by the NCAA and in 1982 he was presented the "Teddy Award," the organization's most prestigious honor. The "Teddy Award" is given to a prominent American "for whom competitive athletics in college and attention to physical well-being thereafter have been important factors in a distinguished career of national significance and achievement."
